Pitch & Tempo
Shift a voice or a song up or down in semitones, or speed it up and slow it down without changing its pitch. Works on audio and on a video's sound.
The Pitch & Tempo node changes the pitch and the tempo of audio independently. Pitch moves the sound up or down in semitones and keeps its length. Tempo makes the sound faster or slower and keeps its pitch. Wire in audio to get audio back, or a video to get the same video back with its sound shifted.
When to use it
- Move a song or a melody into another key.
- Make a voice deeper or higher, and keep it natural.
- Slow a clip down, or speed it up, to fit a time slot without the voice changing pitch.
- Create a chipmunk or a giant voice for a character.
Quick start
Add the node
Press Tab on the canvas and choose Audio › Edit Audio › Pitch & Tempo.
Wire the media
Wire an audio node or a video node into the Media input.
Set the pitch and the tempo
Open the settings panel. Set Pitch (semitones), Tempo, or both.
Run it
Click Run on the node. For audio, the result appears on the Audio output. For a video, it appears on the Video output.
Input and output
| Input | Accepts | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Media | Audio and video nodes | The audio, or the video whose sound you want to change. |
The output follows the input. For audio, the output is Audio, an MP3 file. For a video, the output is Video: the same video, with the picture copied as it is and the sound shifted. The audio ends exactly when the picture ends.
The node reads the file itself to decide whether it is audio or video. An audio-only file is treated as audio, even when it arrives through a video connection.
Settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Pitch (semitones) | From -12 to 12, in steps of 0.1. The default is 0. 12 is one octave up and -12 is one octave down. |
| Tempo | From 0.5 to 2, in steps of 0.05. The default is 1. 0.5 plays at half speed and makes the audio twice as long. 2 plays at double speed. The pitch does not change. |
| Preserve formants | On by default. Keeps a voice sounding like the same person when its pitch changes. Turn it off for a chipmunk or a giant voice. |
For a video, Tempo is fixed at 1 and the setting is turned off, so the sound keeps matching the picture. To change the speed of a video, use Adjust Speed.
Credits
Pitch & Tempo costs 22 credits for every started minute of the input, from 1 minute up to 30 minutes. A 45-second clip is charged as 1 minute, and a 3-minute-10-second clip as 4 minutes. The node shows the exact price before it runs.
The price depends only on the input's length. Pitch, tempo and a longer output after slowing down do not change it. The node measures the input before anything is charged, so the same input always costs the same.
Tips
- Stay within about 4 semitones for natural speech. Larger shifts make a voice sound processed, even with Preserve formants on.
- Change the key of a song by its interval. For example, -2 moves a song down a whole tone.
- Fit a clip to a slot with small tempo changes. A tempo of 0.9 makes a clip about 11% longer, and the voice keeps its pitch.
- Shift a voice before you merge it. Put Pitch & Tempo in front of Merge Video & Audio or Mix Audio.
Troubleshooting
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| The input is longer than 30 minutes | Trim it first with Trim Audio, then run the node on the shorter clip. Nothing is charged. |
| The length of the input could not be read | Check that the file opens and is a common audio or video format. Nothing is charged. |
| The media has no audio track to shift | The video has no sound. Add a sound to it first, for example with Merge Video & Audio. The credits are refunded. |
From the API
POST /v1/pitch-tempo takes exactly one of audioUrl or videoUrl, plus the optional semitones, tempo and preserveFormants. The SDK method is client.audio.pitchTempo, the CLI command is nodaro audio pitch-tempo, and the MCP tool is pitch_tempo. See Voice and media.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the pitch of a voice without changing its speed?
Set Pitch (semitones) and leave Tempo at 1. The audio keeps its length. Keep Preserve formants on so that the voice still sounds like the same person.
Can I slow audio down without making it sound lower?
Yes. Set Tempo below 1, for example 0.8. The audio gets longer and the pitch stays the same.
Does Pitch & Tempo work on video?
Yes, for pitch. The node shifts the video's sound and returns the same video, with the picture untouched. Tempo stays at 1 for a video, so the sound keeps matching the picture.
How many credits does Pitch & Tempo cost?
22 credits for every started minute of the input, from 1 to 30 minutes. The price depends only on the input's length, not on the settings.
How do I make a chipmunk or a giant voice?
Turn off Preserve formants, then shift the pitch up for a chipmunk voice or down for a giant voice.
