# Character Motion

> Direct what a character does in an AI video clip. Chain up to 3 of more than 1,000 moves, such as walk in, wave or hug, and name who performs them.

Source: https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls/character-motion

The **Character Motion** picker directs what the subject does across a video clip: walks in, turns to the camera, nods, waves, dances, ducks, draws and fires, or walks a runway. You chain up to three moves from a catalog of more than 1,000. Nodaro adds tested wording for the sequence to the prompt of the video node you connect it to. The picker never calls a model, so it costs no credits.

- Found in: Creative Controls › Motion & Time
- Output: text
- API type: `character-motion`

## When to use it
- Give a character a clear action in an image-to-video clip, instead of hoping the model invents one.
- Choreograph a short sequence: an entrance, then a gesture, then a reaction.
- Stage a two-person moment, such as a hug, a handshake or a slow dance, with both characters named.
- Reuse a performance: the same moves, in the same order, on every run.

Character Motion describes ordinary movement over time. Its neighbors cover the rest:

| Picker | What it describes |
| --- | --- |
| [Pose](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls/pose) | One held body position, also for still images |
| **Character Motion** | What the subject does over time |
| [Character FX](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls/character-fx) | A supernatural change to the subject, such as a werewolf transformation |
| [Action FX](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls/action-fx) | An event in the scene, such as an explosion or lightning |
| [Camera Motion](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls/camera-motion) | How the camera moves, not the subject |

## How to use it
### Add the picker

Open the node picker and choose **Creative Controls › Motion & Time › Character Motion**. You can also click the **Look** input of a [Generate Video](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/video/generate-video) node and choose **Character Motion** from the list. Character Motion is its own node, not a setting inside Generate Video.

### Choose up to three moves, in order

Click the node and choose moves from the catalog. Search also finds a move by its former name or another common name. The first pick happens first. Use the up and down buttons to reorder the picks, and **Remove** to clear one. When three moves are picked, a new choice does not replace any of them.

### Set the timing

Choose a **Position** for when the movement happens in the clip and a **Pace** for its tempo. Both start at **Auto**, which adds nothing.

### Name who moves

Connect a [Character Asset](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/assets/character) node to the **Target subject** input. For a two-person move, connect a second character to **Partner**.

### Connect and run

Drag from the picker's output to the **Look** input of Generate Video, then run the video node.

Workflow: Mira performs three moves in order and hugs Theo. The characters also feed the Assets input, so the model sees what they look like.

- Character Asset → Character Motion (target subject)
- Character Asset → Character Motion (partner)
- Character Motion → Generate Video (look)
- Generate Image → Generate Video (start frame)
- Character Asset → Generate Video (assets)
- Character Asset → Generate Video (assets)

## Settings
| Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Character Motion** | Up to 3 moves, in order. They are joined as "then": the first move, then the second, then the third. A new node starts at **Auto**, which adds nothing. |
| **Position** | When the movement happens in the clip. See the table below. |
| **Pace** | The tempo of the movement. See the table below. |
| **Custom text (before)** | Your own words, added before the movement, for example `after a long pause`. |
| **Custom text (after)** | Your own words, added after the movement, for example `still holding the cup`. |
| **Prompt hint** | **Full** (default) adds the full description of each move. **Compact** adds only the short term for each move. See [Full or Compact](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls#full-or-compact). |

| Position | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Auto** | Let the model place the movement |
| **Start** | Begins at the opening of the clip |
| **Middle** | Begins midway through the clip |
| **End** | Happens in the closing moments of the clip |
| **Full** | Plays out across the entire clip |

| Pace | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Auto** | Let the model set the tempo |
| **Slow Motion** | The action itself is rendered in slow motion |
| **Slow** | Performed slowly and deliberately |
| **Natural** | Performed at an everyday tempo |
| **Fast** | Performed quickly, brisk and urgent |
| **Explosive** | A sudden burst from stillness into full-speed motion |

The settings panel shows the words the picker will add under **Will inject into prompt**. This is the picker's part of the prompt, not the final prompt: other nodes, references and the model's own limits can still change what the model receives.

## Name the subject and the partner

The picker has two inputs on its left edge. Each accepts a [Character Asset](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/assets/character), [Create Face](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/assets/create-face), [Object/Props Asset](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/assets/object), [Animal/Creature Asset](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/assets/creature) or [Location Asset](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/assets/location) node.

- **Target subject.** Its name replaces every "the subject" in the moves, and possessives read naturally, for example "Theo's back". With nothing connected, "the subject" stays, and the video model decides who it is from what is in the frame.
- **Partner.** Its name replaces "the partner" in two-person moves, such as a hug, a handshake or a slow dance. With nothing connected, a human partner is introduced once as "another person", and later mentions read "that same person".
- **Other participants.** Moves with an animal, a baby or an object, such as petting a dog, use the Partner input for that participant too. With nothing connected, the move names its default participant, for example a dog. A connected node only gives the participant a name; it does not check that the participant fits the move.
- **Several targets.** Each target performs its own copy of the sequence. With Partner unconnected, each copy gets its own "another person", so two targets never act on the same person. For choreography between people, use separate Character Motion nodes.
- **Several partners.** Their names are joined with "and".

The inputs only supply names. To show the video model what a character looks like, also connect the Character to the **Assets** input of the video node.

## A worked example

Three moves — **Walk in from left**, **Wave hello** and **Hug** — with **Position** set to **Start** and **Pace** set to **Slow**. A Character named Mira is on **Target subject**, and a Character named Theo is on **Partner**.

In **Full** mode, the picker adds:

```text
Mira walks into frame from the left edge at an even stride, weight rolling heel to toe, crosses toward center and stops facing forward, then Mira lifts one hand to shoulder height, palm forward, and waves it side to side in a friendly greeting before letting the arm drop back to the side, then Mira steps toward Theo, opens both arms and wraps them around Theo's back in a firm hug, holds the hug, and loosens the arms to step back, the movement begins at the opening of the clip, performed slowly and deliberately, each phase of the movement given its full time
```

In **Compact** mode, each move is its short term, and the target's name comes first:

```text
Mira: walks in from frame left, then waves hello, then hugs Theo, the movement begins at the opening of the clip, performed slowly and deliberately, each phase of the movement given its full time
```

## Checks in the settings panel

The settings panel reviews your sequence and shows advisory messages about:

- **Body positions.** A move starts from a different body position than the previous move ends in.
- **Leaving the frame.** The subject leaves the frame before another action.
- **Busy hands.** A move needs free hands, but the hands are already holding something.
- **Timing.** A move has a fixed tempo that disagrees with **Pace**.
- **Prerequisites.** A move needs something that the sequence does not set up.
- **The same node twice.** One node is connected to both **Target subject** and **Partner**.
- **Old or unknown moves.** A move was retired or does not exist.
- **Long choreography.** The sequence has many phases.

The messages never block **Run**. Fix the red messages before you run. A check that shows nothing does not prove that two moves fit together: not every move has this information yet.

## Protection for minors

Moves marked adult-only, which are explicitly sensual looks and kissing variants, are left out of the prompt when a Character on **Target subject** or **Partner** is a minor. Neutral dance, taking off a coat over an outfit and ordinary hugs stay available. The preview says which picks were left out, including when every pick was left out.

## Every move

Filter by category or search by name. The words under each name are the term the picker adds in **Compact** mode.

## Tips
- **Order is the story.** Pick the entrance first, the gesture second and the reaction third.
- **Name the performer.** Connect a Character to **Target subject**, so every move names the same person.
- **Split long choreography.** For more than a short sequence, split the action into several shots and check where each clip ends and the next one starts. Adding more motion nodes does not coordinate their timing.
- **Pair it with the camera.** A walk toward the camera with a Dolly Out from [Camera Motion](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls/camera-motion) reads as one choreographed shot.
- **Match the pace to the scene.** Use **Slow Motion** for stylized action beats and **Natural** for dialogue scenes.
- **Give the moves what they need.** A chair to sit on, a horse to mount or a person to hug must be in the frame or in the prompt.
- **Test complex moves on your model.** Each video model follows choreography differently. A singing move describes the visible performance; for synchronized lyrics, use audio with [Lip Sync](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/video/lip-sync).
- **Left and right follow the frame.** "From left" means the left edge of the frame, unless a move says it means the subject's own side. Check directions together with [Camera Motion](https://nodaro.ai/docs/nodes/creative-controls/camera-motion), especially for exits and tracking shots.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does the Character Motion picker do?

It describes what the subject does over the course of a video clip, such as walking in, turning to the camera, waving or dancing, and adds that description to the prompt of the video node it is connected to.

### Where do I add Character Motion?

It is its own picker node. Add it from the node picker under Creative Controls › Motion & Time, or click the Look input of a Generate Video node and choose it from the list. It is not a setting inside Generate Video.

### How many moves can I chain?

Up to 3, in order. The first move happens, then the second, then the third. Three moves is the picker's limit, not a promise that they fit every clip length.

### How do I make the move name my character?

Connect a Character, Face, Object, Creature or Location node to the Target subject input. Its name replaces "the subject" in every move. For two-person moves, connect a second character to Partner.

### Does Character Motion work on still images?

No. Movement needs time, so the picker works only with video nodes. Use the Pose picker for a single held position in a still image.

### Does Character Motion cost credits?

No. Pickers only change the prompt. You pay only for the video node that uses it.
